Lieutenant Commander Stansfield Turner was born in Chicago, Illinois, in December 1923. He was raised in the Chicago area and attended public schools and high schools in Highland Park, Illinois. In September 1941, he entered Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts, and pursued a liberal arts course until June 1943. At that time he was appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy and entered with the class of 1947.
     During his years at the Naval Academy, he played varsity football and in the spring term of his first year was Commander of the Brigade of Midshipmen.
     He graduated in June 1946, and went to sea duty in the USS PALAU (CVE 122). This was followed by a tour in the Mediterranean in the U. S. S. DAYTON (CL 120). In September 1947, he entered Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship and pursued a course in political science leading to a Master's Degree, until March 1950.
     Returning to the sea-going Navy, he served in the U. S. S. STRIBLING (DD 867) for a year and a half. Following this he was aide to the Chief of Staff, CINCNELM, based in Naples, Italy. 1952 and 1953, he served in the U. S. S. HANSON (DDR 832), largely in support of the Korean War.
     In May 1954, he reported to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations for duty in the Politico-Military Policy Division.  He commanded the U. S. S. CONQUEST (MSO 488) from December 1956 to June 1958 when he was transferred to the Staff of CINCPAC at Pearl Harbor.  In September 1960, he reported aboard MORTON for duty as Executive Officer.  He is married and has two children.

Stansfield Turner
Admiral Stansfield Turner, Morton's second XO is one of two recipients of the 2004 Lone Sailor Award. Presenting the award is Rear Admiral Pierce J. Johnson, USNR, (Ret.) president and CEO of the US Navy Memorial .Foundation. Since 1991,  Admiral Turner has tought in the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Maryland. Master of ceremonies for the event was Earnest Borgnine, who served ten years in the navy, mostly on destroyers and submarine chasers during WW II.
