Frederick C. "Fox" Johnson

     Rear Admiral Frederick C. Johnson began naval service
as an enlisted man in April 1943 and served in a number
of ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific during and after
World War II. He earned an appointment to the U.S. Naval
Academy Preparatory School in 1947, and accepted an
appointment to the Naval Academy in June 1948
graduating in June 1952.
     After graduation, he was assigned to USS LOS ANGELES
(CA-135) as Assistant First Lieutenant. He made two
wartime deployments in USS LOS ANGELES during the
Korean War. In January 1955, LTJG Johnson was
assigned as Gunnery Officer aboard USS HENRY W.
TUCKER (DDR-875) and made two deployments which
included participation in the Formosa Patrol operations. LT
Johnson was then assigned in December 1956 as aide
and Operations Officer to Commander Destroyer Division
32. While on the staff at the Navy Postgraduate School,
he completed graduate work in naval ordnance and fire
control.
     LT Johnson assumed command of the USS STARK
COUNTY (LST-1134) in June 1959 until assigned to the
staff of Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, as the
staff Ordnance Readiness/Material Officer. LCDR Johnson
attended the Naval War College, Newport, RI until June
1964 and was subsequently assigned as executive officer,
navigator and interim commanding officer of USS JOHN
R. PIERCE (DD-753). He then commanded USS
COURTNEY (DE-1021) until December 1966. After a
three-year tour in the Strategic Plans and Policy Division
(OP-605) on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, he
commissioned USS GRAY (DE-1054) and served as
commanding officer until December 1971. Commander
Johnson served subsequently as Surface Operations
Officer on the Staff of Commander Carrier Group ONE
until March 1973 prior to assuming command of Destroyer Squadron 21. Captain Johnson served as the Chief
of Staff and aide to Commander Carrier Group FIVE until ordered to report as Director, Undersea and Strategic
Warfare and Nuclear Energy Development Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OP-981). He was
promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in August 1978. In November 1978, he reported as Director, Command
and Control Planning and Programming, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OP-940). Rear Admiral
Johnson assumed the duties as Commander Training Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet on 31 July 1981.
     In addition to the assignments listed above, Frederick C. "Fox" Johnson was Morton's eleventh Skipper,
commanding her from 11 July 1974 through 26 July 1974 as interim Skipper.
Rear Admiral Johnson is married to the former Holly Murphy of Florence, South Dakota. They have two
daughters: Holly Diane, and Kandy Karen; and one son, Frederick Charles, Jr. The Johnsons make their family
home in San Diego, California.
