Commander William C. Young was raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, attending the public schools and high school. In September 1937, he entered Muhlenberg College, Allentown and in 1938 attended the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and pursued an engineering course until 1940. He entered the Navy as Seaman Apprentice in the V-7 program and was commissioned as an Ensign in 1942. He attended the Gunner's Mate and Torpedo School at Newport, Rhode Island and was assigned as Gunnery Instructor at Bainbridge, Maryland. This was followed by a sea tour from 1943 until 1947 when he saw service with the amphibious forces serving on board the USS GRIGGS (APA 110), USS BRONX (APA 236) and with the staff; COMTRANS DIV THIRTEEN on board the USS CHILTON (APA 38). In 1947, he joined the destroyer fleet aboard the USS JOHN A. BOLE (DD 755) as Operations Officer. In 1949, he received orders to report to the USS WANTUCK (APD 125) as Executive Officer where he saw service in the Korean War. Following his tour in WANTUCK, he attended the Naval War College as a student followed by reporting in June 1953 to Chief; Bureau of Naval Personnel for a tour of duty. Returning to the seagoing Navy, he reported to the USS GEORGE (DE 697) as Commanding Officer serving from September 1955 until October 1957. In November 1957, he attended Language School at Anacostia with subsequent assignment to the U.S. Naval Mission, Venezuela. He served as the technical advisor to the Venezuela Fleet Commander for operations and training. In addition, he was advisor to the Commandant of the War College. Following detachment in the summer of 1960, be reported to the USS MORTON (DD 948) and served as Commanding Officer from September 1960 to September 1962. In April 1962, he was assigned temporary additional duty as Chief Staff Officer to Commander Destroyer Division One Seventy-Two. In September 1962, he received orders to report as Commander Fleet Training Group and Commanding Officer Fleet Training Center, Charleston, South Carolina. He was relieved in December 1964 and retired 1 January 1965. Since retirement, he attended Florida State University and received his BA degree and an MS degree from University of Arkansas. Following approximately eighteen months working with corporate America, he entered Civil Service as anti-submarine warfare training specialist. He served in the training division of Bureau of Naval Personnel as Program Manager. This was followed by a tour on the staff of Chief of Naval Technical Training, Millington, Tennessee and a subsequent tour as Program Manager on the staff of Commander Training Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet, San Diego, California. On 1 March 1996, he retired from Civil Service with a total of fifty-five years of government service. Commander Young was MORTON’s 2nd Commanding Officer, serving from 23 September 1960 to 5 September 1962. Commander Young is married to the former Jeanne E. Lienhard of Palmerton, Pennsylvania.
